If you want to try something new and different from Scuba diving then this should be your best choice.
Freediving is a form of underwater diving that relies on divers’ ability to hold their breath until resurfacing rather than on the use of a breathing apparatus such as scuba gear.
We decided to offer a new direction for the club members besides scuba diving and started developing Freediving as a complete direction in underwater activities. Another reason for initiating that kind of sport in Armenia was to assess Lake Sevan as a dive resort for freediving.
We did deep research in Freediving study methods, certification, conditions needed to start corresponding courses and in July of 2017 the first group was formed to learn and get certificates. The course was rather successful and 3 months after that the second attempt was made during which already 2 groups with 4-5 people in each participated.
Currently we do not have a certified instructor for Freediving in Armenia and the courses are passed by Russian Freediving Federation senior instructor, yoga therapist, candidate of biological sciences – Olga Davydova. There is a plan for near future to develop Armenian freedivers to become licensed instructors in order to be able to offer courses in Armenian language, as well as give opportunity to people to pass it any time during the year, as opposed to limiting to specific periods of the year when the instructor from the Russian Federation will arrive.
There is a stereotype that Armenia is a land country, and its inhabitants are not best friends with water. But now we see that scuba diving is actively developing here, it just needed some organizational effort and enthusiasm to give people the opportunity to learn. Therefore, we are sure that for the development of freediving in Armenia there are all prospects, and Lake Sevan will be appreciated and will become known and popular among freedivers.
The Freediving course consists of 3 main phases, including 6 trainings in the pool. The duration of 1 class is approximately 2.5 hours (1 hour for knowledge development, and 1.5 hours in swimming pool). At the end of the course an exam is passed and a Russian Federation Freediver qualification certificate is issued.
